Sydney Hobart Race Competitors Face Smoke Disasters

The 2020 edition of the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race has started and the competitors are facing a lot of distress calls already. The 628nm yacht race sponsored by Rolex in 2019 was comparatively milder than this year. The northerly delivery of the wind that is being seen alongside the east coast of Australia has forced three boats to issue distress calls in just half an hour on the very first day of the race that started on 5th January. Gun Runner which is a 30 foot yacht designed by Jarkan called out for help for the first time during the race as it got dismasted.

Five minutes passed by, Business, the yacht for Murray Secret 42 Men issued a distress call for reporting injuries for two of their crews on board. Sometime later, the crew for Ker 40 Showtime that is owned by Mark Griffith announced that the keel of their yacht had fallen. All the seven members of the crew had taken to a liferaft which was to be picked by the emergency services after almost three hours of the falling of the keel. The keel sunk away to the Bermagui coast which is about halfway between Melbourne and Sydney.

Boat Representing Ireland Secures at Tokyo 2020

The boat for Ireland has qualified for the Tokyo Olympics to be held next year. Aisling Keller is representing Ireland and she has been able to qualify in the laser radial event for the sport. The laser radial for which Ireland have qualified is the single-handed event for women in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Keller sailed to achieve the 46th position at the World Championship for Laser Radial. Fellow competitor, Aoife Hopkins finished in the 48th position behind Keller. She is also from Ireland. It is excellent that both Aoife and Aisling have been determined qualifiers for the Olympics event.

Keller stated after the race that she has been able to rub off the weight off her shoulders surely. She also said that this was probably one of the hardest and toughest regattas that she has ever sailed. Keller also added that she was really excited to know that it was done and dusted after coming out of the waters. The time that she took was good enough to get the 7th position out of 10 in the Olympic places that are generally offered at the championships. On the other hand, Hopkins would rather secure the 9th rank in the Olympic Games. Continue reading “Boat Representing Ireland Secures at Tokyo 2020”

Vanguard 15 Fleet From Nashville

The Vanguard 15 fleet from Nashville was not in existence till recently. A team of six sailors decided to pitch in and buy boats as well as committed to a schedule of sailing. With their concerted efforts the area now has a new community of sailors which are made of a mix of veteran and new sailors.

The sailing scene was dying in Nashville when the older racers were moving out and there were no new enthusiastic sailors to continue the sailing scene. At such a time a ragtag group assembled and decided to pitch in, get six boats and commit to sailing over the weekends. The Vanguard 15 of the double handed design was then decided upon which was exciting and fast to sail in the breeze. The group got together used boats as well as parts that were available and even obtained six boat trailers.

Since then the Nashville V15 fleet has grown. Today there are 19 members in total. Some members neither own a boat nor have raced but they are gaining the know how from the others. The less experienced sailors are learning to sail in breeze conditions of 10 knots so that they can gain confidence to sail when the breeze is 25 knots. It is a culture where information is shared and help is given where it is required to encourage learners to sail. LaBorde and Ted Lischer are known to be the godfathers of fleet building in the sailing circles in the Midwest. They are helping to build the learning and sharing culture so that the group can grow quickly. Today it is called a sailing family and they are committed to growing fleets elsewhere as well. The fleet focuses on providing social opportunities to promote the sailing culture which also includes having skippers and crew knowing each other.
